Like any other sports, you have to be fit to enjoy surfing to the fullest Of course, with proper exercise and physical training, you will be able to unleash your body's full potential to perform your best in the said sport.

Indeed, there are a lot of challenges in the unique sport of surfing and you have to be fit to be able to do your best in the sport or competition. Here are a few exercises and workouts that will help you attain total surfing fitness for the sport.

Stretching is one of the things that you have to keep in mind before you start with any exercises. Developing your flexibility is important to help you avoid injuries especially that such sport requires a lot of challenges in the water.

If you want to maximize your power in surfing, you have to also focus on developing your core strength or the strength of your core muscles. Among the exercises that you can include in your core training are squats and planks and you may even use light exercise equipment for your workouts.

You can develop good control with squats as these are great exercises that you can start with for your total surfing fitness. The plank exercises on the other hand will also help you build endurance in your core as well.

Your training program should also include other exercises that strengthen your arms and shoulders to allow you to develop strength and speed in paddling over the waves. Weight training is a good exercise to help you build strength as well. You can make use of light equipment to help you develop body strength, such as lifting dumbbells while you are doing your workouts.

Swimming itself is a good exercise to help you develop your paddling skills. You can also do the training on sea instead of the pool to help you attune your body to the sea and to the waves itself.

Running is also a great cardio exercise good for your heart and also good to establish strength of your legs. Running on the sand is also a good way to exercise your legs to avoid lesser impact on your legs as well.

Keep in mind that in whatever fitness program that you have to follow, it is important that you have to consider the quality of your workouts and exercises. You have to consider also the frequency and duration, the intensity as well as the speed.

It is also important to consider stretching exercises to develop flexibility. This will help you avoid injuries in such a challenging sport. You can do stretching exercises before and after your training program to warm up and warm down your muscles.

Aside from doing some common cardio exercises as well as weight training exercises, you can also use some light exercise equipment to help you stay fit for surfing. Aside from dumbbells as a great addition to achieve total fitness, you can also use medicine ball or you can workout in the gym for your anaerobic exercises, but don't forget as well that attaining total surfing fitness means combining both anaerobic and aerobic exercises to maximize your potentials.

Surfing is indeed a wonderful and exciting sport but of course, along with the fun of enjoying this particular sport is the challenge of being fit enough to do your best and enjoy the sport to the fullest. To be able to learn a few tips on surf fitness training, here are some of the things that you might find useful.

To help yourself do your best in the sport, you have to plan your surf fitness training and find ways to make your body prepared and your energy optimized to tackle the challenge of riding waves and making good at it.

For your surf fitness training, you have to focus on your core muscles, your upper body, your lower body as well as developing overall flexibility to unleash your full potential to enjoy the sport and avoid injuries as well.

Of course, if you are conditioned and fit for the sport, you will be able to surf longer, and your turns and tricks are more powerful and smoothly done. With proper surf fitness training, you will be able to develop the balance, flexibility and core strength that are needed in executing your surfing tricks.

To start planning your surf fitness training program, you must consider adding some stretching exercises or flexibility exercises before going through the training itself as well as after your workout. If you decide to further your training to plyometrics, a little stretching will help you avoid injuries while doing your workout.

To develop your core strength, which is one of the most important considerations in surfing, you can do some squat exercises and plank exercises as well, and you can also make use of some light exercise equipment to help you develop strength faster as well. Dumbbells and exercise balls are among the most common and easier to use.

However, you have to keep in mind also that if you want to be physically fit for surfing, you have to focus not only in anaerobic exercises but also the aerobic ones. Of course, you will not only need the strength for surfing, but you will also need to improve your endurance for you to last longer and do better in surfing.

Among the aerobic or cardiovascular exercises that will help you unleash your full potential in surfing is to engage in swimming. Of course, it may be obvious, but then again, swimming is indeed one of the best exercises that can improve your surfing skills as well. Running is also another cardiovascular exercise good for your heart as well as in building endurance in surfing.

When it comes to anaerobic exercises, you can however choose a lot of workouts specifically intended for surfing. From shoulder press to press-ups, these can play a major role in improving your surfing skills. Another trend that many surfers are now looking into is yoga. Indeed, yoga can be a very good exercise to develop flexibility, stamina and power in your surfing. Thus, if you want to unleash your surfing power, you have to make sure you have a training program that fits your need in surfing.

As a surfer, and all round 'board sports' woman, I want my training to make my 'playtime' even more fun! I windsurf, surf, kitesurf, snowboard and have recently taken up stand up paddle surfing - my weekends are dedicated to whatever nature has in store, and if the forecast is for strong winds or massive swell, I need to be ready for it!

Unfortunately, sports that are weather dependent, such as surfing or windsurfing, can be infuriatingly unpredictable, and you can go months on end without a day where 'not being at work' co-incides with a good forecast! If you are a pro, then of course you can dedicate your time to searching out the right conditions, or being ready for them when they come, but as most of us have full time jobs too, we have to accept the fact that we can't be out there ripping it up as much as we might like.

So it makes sense to ensure that we are maximising our precious time on the water by being as fit for it as possible. And that's where kettlebells come in pretty handy...

Many surfers and other board sports lovers are by nature a little anti-'being indoors too much' so the idea of going from the office to the gym can be more than a little painful. Many will go begrudgingly because they feel they should and realise they need to stay in shape, but the love for sports that get you right out there in the elements means they are far happier in the open air. So the portability of kettlebells is a big plus - throw them (well, don't actually throw, but you get my point) in the back of the van (gotta have a surf van, but car will do) and take them to the beach or park for a workout, rather than cooping your primal self up in a sweaty gym!

Surfing requires a heady mix of strength, power, endurance, mobility, stability, balance and fluidity that can all be perfectly developed using a properly constructed kettlebell program.

The first hurdle a surfer has to contend with is a hard paddle out back in the first place. So you are going to need a strong back and shoulders, mobility through the shoulder girdle, a healthy rotator cuff and of course the heart and lungs to keep this all going as you battle it out past the white water.

Kettlebells make working the posterior chain a natural step, the basic swing strengthens the entire back side of the body, whilst also developing endurance by getting the heart pumping. Moving into snatches, and you have an even more powerful exercise for the surfer, as you strengthen and stabilise the shoulder and shoulder girdle at lockout, and the workload becomes even more intense.

A great way to condition yourself for the paddle out would be a 10 minute snatch test. Perform 10 reps on each side, resting between sets as little as you can but as much as you need, for a total of 10 minutes. Count your reps performed in the time period and aim to beat your number next time! The aim here is to ultimately rest as little as possible to get maximum reps in, so staying fluid and relaxed while working hard is key - again a great crossover, as paddling out into big sets you need to keep calm and focussed.

In addition, great exercises for paddling would include a supine KB pullover - lying on your back, feet flat and knees bent, hold the KB at your chest, arms almost straight, and drop the arms, hinging at the shoulders not the elbows, overhead almost to the floor, then return to the start position. Go as heavy as you can on this, or try one smaller kettlebell in one hand and alternate.

Flexibility and stability in the shoulders can be developed with the snatch, and also the windmill when the kettlebell is held in the upper hand - this is a vital exercise in the surfer's armoury as it strengthens the mid section while under torsion, providing a 3 dimensional approach to 'core' training that is so often overlooked in more conventional training.

So, you've made it out back, and your watching the sets roll in. You pick a wave and you have to sprint like mad to catch the bloody thing. So you are going to need some serious reserve capacity in that cardiovascular system to manage it. So ensuring you are performing hard, intense intervals in your training program. The snatch-test approach mentioned earlier should do the job nicely - but you could also consider adding in some shorter, even more intense intervals in addition. Try a heavier kettlebell than you use in the snatch test, and perform tabata intervals (20 s work, 10 s rest) for 4 mins total.

Next comes the 'pop up'. Explosive power, co-ordination and balance all come together in one fluid movement, and you will find that a core of steel will give you a significant advantage. Of course, there is no substitute for practicing the actual drill, so you could get yourself an 'Ollypop' towel and physically practice the 'pop' as part of your warm up. But in addition, you should include Turkish get ups (which are also great for the shoulders) as well as windmills as already mentioned. V sits with the kettlebell going through the same overhead motion as the pullover are also great, you can pull the knees in to your chest, or, taking it further, have the arms and legs straight and 'pike' up to centre.

Renegade rows are a staple favourite in any training plan as they are great for the core and the upper back, so these have got to be in a surfing fitness plan for definite! Combine with some press ups in the same position, either alternating each rep (row, press up, row, press up) or doing a set of one then the other. A bottoms up kettlebell low plank is also a good one to throw in for good measure.

So, you've mastered the pop-up and you're up and surfing! Front squats are a great exercise for the pop up and also for the ride itself, as they load up the core while developing leg strength. Squatting rock bottom is the key - once you have the mobility and strength to squat rock bottom with added load, you will feel how 'free' your legs feel and how you can surf fluidly with more ease and less effort. Single leg squats & deadlifts are also key exercises to include.

Training barefoot or in minimal shoes means throughout the entire training session we are strengthening up our feet - and while surfing, the feet are working hard to direct your bodyweight effectively into the board so you can turn and ride smoothly. I personally love to wear my Vibram Five Fingers as much as I can, not just for training - and as much as I hate wearing wetsuit boots unless I absolutely have to (i.e. my toes would otherwise drop off with the cold!) I think one of the reasons I love them so much is that they look a bit 'webbed' and remind me of being on the water! I have noticed that my toes have literally come alive since wearing them, and my feet are so much stronger. This has such an impact on how well you can control the board - it makes it worth the funny looks I get at the supermarket!

The beauty of surfing is that you are compelled to stay out as long as the conditions are firing, and having a solid level of fitness means you won't need to be cutting your sessions short as you haven't got enough in you to keep going. Making the most of days when the swell isn't pumping, and pumping some cast iron kettlebells instead, means you can jump in when the conditions call for it and make the most of every second!

Learn to Surf Age - How Old Is Too Old to Learn Surfing?

There is no argument that surfing is a rigorous sport, that requires a level of fitness a little higher than the average couch potato, but there are many factors to consider if you are looking at learning to surf at an age beyond your youth. If you are an active person with a clean bill of health then the only thing stopping you is YOU. You don't have to be Kelly Slater to begin to learn to surf, but leaning more toward Kelly than Couch Potato will certainly help. Fitness is an essential part of maintaining a good relationship with your surfing passion, but as you learn and practice, your fitness will also improve. Other factors to consider when deciding whether or not to give it a go are:

#1 Letting go of your ego

Lets face it, no one likes to look like a fool, especially an old fool!. You will need to get over the fear of looking stupid and remember that everyone has to start at the same place, young or old. No one really cares how much your ego is going to get bruised, so just get on with it. You're going to make mistakes and you will learn from them. If you're lucky, someone will snap a memorable pic of you with totally focused concentration on your face as a keepsake. Remember we all make mistakes out there no matter how good we are.

#2 The type of board you ride is important

Learning on any board that happens to be lying around may not be the best idea. Short boards are like greyhounds. They require a little more precision handling than a long board or a fun board, and unless you already have quite the balancing act, you will probably either pearl (nose dive), or bog the board down by laying too far back. This may prevent you from actually catching any waves at all. Your position on the board is paramount and you need the correct board to do this. The shorter the board, the smaller the balance point. The technology of soft boards has come along way in the last couple of years. Soft boards are great for the beginner because they don't hurt when you hit them, land on them or they land on you. An as older surfer, you may be carrying a few extra kilos, so the polystyrene foam construction of these boards is more than capable of supporting the larger body. These boards may not have the same prestige as a fiber glass board, but what would you rather have, a dented ego or a dented hide?

#3 Wearing the right gear

Having the right equipment means also wearing protection from the sun or cold, or protection from the wax on the deck of the board. In Australia, the "she'll be right attitude' is one that can have you paying dearly for that hour of fun in the sun the next day. Having the right gear, for example, a rash guard (rash vest) or a wetsuit can mean the difference between an enjoyable experience and one that can leave you feeling tired, sunburned, cold and/or covered in rashes. Technology has made suits more flexible and lighter, molding to the body contours and allowing more unrestricted arm and leg movements. Less restricted movements means your energy wont be sapped before you get to do what you are trying to do. If we are already carrying a few extra kilos, we certainly don't need the extra weight of ill fitting wetsuits holding excess water.

#4 Which surf conditions are best to learn in?

The solid waves of Western Australia or Indonesia can deliver a punchy reminder to get to the gym a little more often than you may be used to. The softer waves of the Australian Eastern coastline are perhaps a little easier on the body for a beginner. (I'm not suggesting crossing the Nullabor Plains for a surf lesson!). The water temperature is a matter of preference, but remember that although wetsuits protect against the cold, they also hold water in them and add weight to your paddling strokes and to your upper body and arms when trying to stand up on the board. This will cause you to expend more energy and fatigue to set in much faster. Cold water also slows down the body's reactions and numbs your outer extremities so you can't feel the board below your feet. Surfing in warm climate is more fun and less overall stress on your body.

#5 How do I know where to go out?

When embarking on a new location to go explore your new passion, remember to take heed of the surf conditions. Beach, reef, point, they all have dangers that you need to be aware of, rips, rocks, channels, currents, marine life. Watch to see how others treat the surf or ask a local. The differences between a point break and a beach break are as vast as the waves themselves. You can usually find a quiet spot on an open beach where you can ride the white water and try to stand up. Beach breaks can have dangerous rips and undercurrents so always go out with a friend, or surf where there are people on the beach. Often there is a designated spot for surf craft just to the left or right of the lifesaving flags on popular beaches, so help is nearby if you need it. These spots are indicated by a blue sign and a white arrow. Points tend to get a lot more crowded as they can offer protection from the winds when the beaches are blown out. Points can also offer more predictable waves and surf conditions for the beginner, but you will most likely find yourself in the water with quite a few other people. Go where you feel like you will be safe but not obstructing other surfers. If you are near a lifeguard tower, let them tell you about the current beach conditions, rips, channels and where or where not to go. They will know the beaches more than anybody.

#6 Get excited by the enthusiasm of others.

If you are still a little unsure about giving it a go alone, book a surf lesson with a bunch of mates who "have always wanted to try surfing". Surf schools will provide the right surf gear for the conditions to keep you warm and rash free and enjoying the lesson. You will learn and laugh under expert tuition in a safe environment and hopefully begin the amazing journey that is surfing. Surf schools teach people of ANY age, and even if the students are younger than you, they will more than likely admire you for having the courage to give it a go. Surfing is a sporting pass time that can be learned by almost anyone of any age...depending on physical fitness. Always remember, if you are in doubt about your physical capabilities, consult your Physician.

Surfing is a sport and should be trained for in kind. Many styles of exercise forget about life's moments of enjoyment and the full movement your body needs to perform in order to swim and catch a wave. Many surfers want to stay active and meet ascetic goals. Losing weight can be made easy, while at the same time be training your body specially for surfing with special exercise designed to train your efficiency. This program was created specifically to exhaust the body's metabolic energy systems (in turn burn more calories with no extra time commitment) and the same time, train the individual for the sport-specific skills of surfing! The skills will help out a beginner by creating an on-land simulation, targeting specific muscle synergies to improve strength and stamina in even the best of surfers! And lets not forget the increased calorie consumption your body demands!

The workout consists of:
- Assisted Pull-ups 1set x max repetitions
- Superman Ball Pass 1 x 8-15
- Triceps Dual-Kickback on Swiss-Ball 1 x 10
- Swiss-Ball Swimming 1'30" interval training
- Core-Board Surfing 1-2'

The exercises are to be performed in series with minimal rest between each.

The pull-ups performed with wide-grip will incorporate larger muscle groups and offer more intensity. The aim is to fatigue and deplete the body's creatine-phosphate system, causing on a heavy reliance upon the glycolytic systems (sugar burning). The PULL-UPS are done on the assisted machine with however much counter-weight is needed to before a challenging amount of pull-ups. The SUPERMAN consists of lying face-down and lifting one's arms in the shape of 'V' (for those in shape, pass a foam-ball slowly from hand-2-hand). The goal is to lift your upper torso vertically off the ground while maintaining a butt squeeze to protect the low back. The following DUAL-KICKBACK is done holding dumbbells while lying belly-down on the Swiss-Ball. The elbows are bent to begin, alongside your torso. The action it to straighten the arms and hold parallel to the ground for 2", then lower to 90 degrees. Next comes the Swiss-Ball SWIMMING to shed the calories. So stay lying on your belly with the ball and grab a 1-5# dumbbell in hand. This looks like swimming freestyle with your arms as your belly rests on top. The secret to the fat loss relies upon the interval structuring. The time should be divided into regular speed strokes, sprint, slow & focused, then finish with a 100% sprint! Now comes recovery! Congratulations, grab a balancing board for CORE-BOARD SURFING! Balance on a board mimicking a surfing stance to bias and ride the imaginary wave and best of all, CATCH YOUR BREATHE! Now after a few weeks, you will feel leaner and ready to tackle the surf. Your physical skills will be honed more than ever and your inner-surfer will be released to dance across the face of a wave or feel great simply watching from ashore!

Layout PROGRAM DESIGN
SURFING circuit for FAT Loss!

Fitness for surfing involves a great deal more than just upper body strength. There are other aspects of total body fitness that you will need to address when taking on the adventure of surfing.

Prolonged surfing time will call for good endurance. Building strong stamina is essential for you to enjoy surfing for lengthy spans of time. Whether you are just getting into surfing or you are already experienced at the sport, you can develop better stamina with certain exercises.

Any endurance exercise such as cycling, swimming, or running will help you gain endurance. Try aerobics classes such as spin classes or other challenging endurance sessions. The key is to get this kind of practice in for a solid twenty minutes in a given session. Just by doing this, improvements will be seen.

Strength training to focus on the shoulders, chest, back, and arms will build the muscles of the upper body. Various exercises to improve upper body strength will be helpful to surfing. Pull-ups and push-ups and all basic strengthening exercises of that nature will be useful for developing upper body strength.

Rowing is an excellent practice to develop both stamina and strength. This will improve the strength of the deltoids, your shoulder muscles, and the legs, as you will use them for pushing while you row. Surfing requires paddling and rowing will certainly prepare you for this.

Strength and balance are needed in the lower body to support successful surfing. Weighted exercises such as lunges and squats can be helpful with this. There is a type of inflatable ball called a Balance Ball with which you can perform exercises to give you better balance.

One of the best methods of exercise you can use is Yoga. It may seem like yoga is not for the manly man surfing the waves, but try it and you will see that it is indeed a challenge. Once you reach a level with this practice where you can hold standing poses for a minute or more, you will have developed strength and balance.

Holding your stance on the surfboard is needed to ride the waves. Yoga gives you a powerful foundation to build a strong, balanced standing posture.

Consider all of the aspects of total body fitness for surfing. Upper body strength itself will not be enough. You will need to develop some other areas of fitness to be successful and improve your surfing technique.

You will need to build your stamina to a strong level of endurance for surfing. If you plan on spending any significant time on the board, stamina will be necessary. As a beginner or an experienced surfer, you can improve your stamina by utilizing particular exercises.

Attend aerobics or martial arts classes for a challenging way to gain endurance. Exercises like running, lap swimming, biking, or working with aerobic machines will build incredible endurance and you will experience positive results quickly. Practice for twenty minutes at a time, keeping a steady pace and improvement is assured.

Push-ups, pull-ups, butterflies, and bench presses are perfect exercises for building upper body strength. Any strength training which focuses on the chest and back as well as the shoulders will build surfing power. Don´t forget to train the arms as well because they will need stamina and strength for surfing.

To improve both strength and stamina in the arms, shoulders, and the legs, rowing is a practical exercise of choice. It will help you improve endurance and strengthen key areas of the body needed in surfing. Rowing prepares you for all the paddling you will be doing too.

Learn exercises with a Balance Ball at your local gym to focus on and enhance your overall balance. Do squats and lunges with proper form as well to strengthen the lower body. This lower body strength coupled with balance gives you a surfing advantage.

Yoga is something you must consider. Many men may feel like it is not for them, but simply give yourself a good week of yoga classes and you will see that it is not for the faint of heart. Yoga supports and develops both balance and strength. When you reach the level of holding standing yoga postures for over one minute, you have established a strong foundation in balance.

While you are surfing smoothly along the waves, your stance must be strong and balanced. Yoga prepares you for such a powerful stance like no other exercise can.

There are a few different styles that are popular: lycra rashguards, surfing t-shirts, and neoprene/lycra hybrids. The purpose of this article is to fill you up with some good information on each of these styles so that you can choose which one is best for you out in the water.

The lycra rash guard is a tight fitting stretchy shirt best in warm water. The primary purpose of a lycra rashguard is sun protection. Many lycra rash guard shirts have up to 150+ SPF ratings. The surf shirts provide little warmth, but are quite comfortable and more effective than sunscreen. Lycra rashguards also work well underneath your wetsuit to prevent under arm rashes and skin irritation.

A surfing t-shirt is a relatively new style shirt. These are basically t-shirts, loose fitting, but have added sun protection. A regular t-shirt only has an SPF of 5, whereas a designated surf shirt has at least 50+ SPF. The only draw back to the surf t-shirt is that being loose fitting they often scrunch up during movements like ripping up a wave, or paddling, which can expose body areas making them susceptible to sunburn. Like a lycra rashguard, surf shirts provide minimal warmth, and are best used in warm water. These t-shirts are also great out of the water with the total sun protection.

The lycra/neoprene hybrid rashguard is excellent for cooler water or dawn patrol sessions. These rashguards combine wetsuit neoprene material with the light weight stretchy lycra to provide warmth, but with more freedom than your standard spring suit or short-john. A draw back to these is that they are quite expensive as compared to lycra rashguards or surf shirts, however you are definitely getting more bang for your buck. A cheaper alternative if you are on a budget could be to just cut the legs off your old full suit.

So there you have it, consider yourself up to date on surfing rashguard shirt technology. Next time you stop by your local surf shop you should see all the different types of shirts we just discussed. There are also many great online stores that carry all the name brands and have great discounts. Just watch out for cheap overseas rashguards that are not made in the USA that are not high quality at all. Make sure your rashguard is made in America to ensure quality. Again, don't get burned dude, cover up with a surfing rashguard shirt today!

Justin Laubscher is co-owner of The Beach Depot, an excellent online store specializing in high quality rashguards and swim shirts and MySurfDVDs.com, another popular store that carries the web's largest selection of DVD surfing titles. World renown for his karaoke skills, Mr. Laubscher is also a drummer, former exotic dancer/model, Olympic curler, and expert in the field of sun protection.

A Real Fitness Role Model

Laird Hamilton is an iconic figure within the surfing community as has been named "all time best of the best." He has been able to achieve this status without even competing! He is married to a professional volleyball player and model, Gabrielle Reece. Not only is he an amazing surfer with a beautiful and talented wife, but he is also an inspiration to fitness enthusiasts everywhere. Laird Hamilton's physique and overall body composition is way more impressive than some of the top athletes in the entire world! So what does surfing legend Laird Hamilton's workout program consist of that enables him to stay in incredible shape all year long?

Get Out Of The Gym For Some Fresh Air

A lot of people can really achieve a much more attractive physique by spending some quality time outside the gym for their workouts. Focusing on cross training outdoors with weight training can really go a long way. Laird Hamilton is the perfect example of his fitness related lifestyle. He actively weight trains, but mixes outdoor activities to help him achieve some impressive low body fat levels. This is a great way to sculpt a near perfect body while having fun doing it.

Laird Hamilton's Style Of Workouts

Hamilton stays active pretty much every day. Even on his "rest" day he will go out and catch some waves. A typical week consists of circuits, surfing, biking, and beach workouts.

On Mondays he focuses on weight training with circuits. He likes to work his whole body with about 15-20 different exercises. His main goal on this day is to have a rest and set scheme that will enable him to reach around 100 reps total.

On Tuesdays, he takes his workouts outside for some fresh air. He is a big fan of mountain biking and sand training, so he will ride his bike around 2 hours and then finish up on the beach. On the beach he likes to do lunges, push-ups, and sand sprints with a log tied behind him. Now that is hardcore! He will then finish off the day in the water. These activities include regular surfing or wind and kite surfing.

Wednesdays are usually back in the gym for circuit training. Once his training is complete he likes to finish off his workout by taking a ride for 1-2 hours. It's not a bad place to take your bike since he spends most of his time capturing the views in either Malibu or Maui!

Thursday workouts can typically be something close to what he does on Tuesdays. He likes to ride his bike for 2-3 hours and work on his beach training routines. To finish off the day it's no surprise to find him out in the water with some kind of surfing activity.

On Fridays he is back at it with circuit training followed with more bike riding of 1-2 hours. Depending on the weekend, he will mix and match Saturday and Sunday for rest. If the waves are rolling in well enough to surf then he will do that on his rest days. If not, then his workout will consist of the same scheme on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Incorporating Outside Activities With Weight Training For Peak Condition

As you can see, Laird Hamilton is the perfect example of how to attain an amazing looking body without being stuck in the gym day after day. You can learn a lot from him by including activities that you enjoy doing with weight training. Incorporating fun activities into your workout can help you stick to your fitness goals by consistently keeping things fresh. Sometimes we put too much emphasis on indoor activities and forget how beneficial it is for our body when we utilize the elements outdoors. This is how surfing legend Laird Hamilton's workout program can teach us how to stay active outside the gym while building an even better body in the mean time.

In this angry and violent society people with disabilities both mental and physical are looked upon by thugs as easy pickings. In fact anyone who looks as though they can't or won't fight back are easy targets for all kinds of low-life, parasitic, degenerates and muggers.

But women especially are almost always considered a push over by the majority of violent attackers, and that's just because the majority of women are not physically able to overpower a man. With that in mind together with the ever present fear of aggression many women are learning the art of self defense.

There are self defense classes for women being held in just about every city and there are a number of martial arts in which you can enrol. Many are purely defensive like Judo, Karate, Ju-Jitsu, Tai Kwon Do and to some extent Kung Fu. These are all very well if you want to learn to disarm someone or block a punch but they can be ineffective against a real heavyweight and determined assailant.

Protecting yourself and holding off an attacker using a martial art type defense move will give you time to escape but won't disable the attacker and might just make him more angry. Women need to learn how to fight back and fight with venom. Their fight back needs to include moves that will really hurt the aggressor and better still if the move can temporarily incapacitate him.

With muggers and rapists roaming the streets women will never be safe unless they take steps to learn how to protect themselves properly. There's no doubt that any potential mugger or rapist would think again if he knew he was going to have to go up against a women who could seriously injure or disable him.

Some martial arts trainers are not permitted to teach you any real deadly moves because most martial arts have their roots in spiritualism and mutual respect. The training can be good for boosting your fitness and stamina levels though, which might come in useful if you have to run away from a confrontation.

The alternative to attending classes and learning about the eastern cultures and defensive techniques and strategies is to watch effective instructional videos from the comfort of your own home. There are no restrictions on self defense videos so the training and moves you are shown are the real deal. You can also learn about all the body's vulnerable spots and how to stop someone in their tracks with a single blow.

Self defense techniques for women need to be highly effective because they just might save a woman's life. Everyone has the right to protect themselves from violent attack and women should not be afraid to respond positively to threats and abuse.

Learning self defense can boost a woman's confidence and self-esteem and make her feel completely independent. No longer does a woman have to feel intimidated or be considered as the "weaker" sex.

Are you serious about learning real self defense techniques that work, today, in the real-world? With the ever-increasing crime rate, the threat of terrorism, and the escalation of workplace violence attacks, is easy to see why more and more people are looking for a good self defense course.

But... "what do you have to do to survive a real street attack?" And...

..."how can you make sure that what you're learning will work, not just in your martial arts or self defense class but, in a real situation?"

Believe it or not, but these two, not-so-simple, questions are the necessary keys to getting precisely what you need. In fact, this is one of the key principles found in any solid, honest, and realistic training program - learning to ask the right questions to get the answers you need for success.

Here's what I mean?

Most people approach a teacher of self-defense, or anything else for that matter, with the question:

"What can you teach me?"

And that question will get you an answer. In fact, it will get you a whole range of answers. Unfortunately, most of those answers won't serve you very well.

Why?

Because the answers will be as vague as the question.

When I'm approached by a student or prospective client with this question, my response is to ask other questions. I do this because I have to find out exactly what's needed. Otherwise, I could end up showing this person a whole bunch of stuff that, quite frankly, may be a complete waste of their time and mine. Could I make a lot of money doing this? Sure. You see it all the time in karate schools, self-defense classes, and in book stores and on the internet.

Is it effective? Well, it does answer the student's question.

Will it be effective in a real attack? Hopefully.

But, let me ask you...

Do you want to "hope" that what you're learning will work, or do you want to "know" that you have the tools to take decisive action and, at the very least, have the advantage over most attackers who will be throwing the most common attacks at you?

To illustrate this important lesson further, let me tell you about Nathan Cooper. Nathan came to me after training in Tae Kwon Do for over 8 years, and realized that, after seeing a real attack, that he wasn't being trained to handle THAT kind of fight - even though he was told that he was.

Oh, Nate was a genius in tournaments. He won nearly every match and had trophies stacked upon trophies in his room.

But, even though he trusted his training with me, it wasn't until the unthinkable happened, that he got the full gist of the lessons. Because...

It wasn't until after successfully defending himself (and two of his friends) in a mall parking lot one night, against two attackers armed with a knife and attitudes that were looking for trouble, did he really understand the difference between martial arts training, and real-world self defense training!

Nate told me that at no time did he ever have an opportunity to use what he learned in his prior martial arts training. He said that, what was obvious and routine in all the competitions that he was in, never materialized during the attack.

He told me that he was pleased to note that he felt "in total control" of the situation because, not only did his new techniques work flawlessly but, the scenario played out exactly like he was taught it would in class. He said that he not only felt like he was able to control the attackers, but he was also in control of the overall situation. And, even though he couldn't prevent them from wanting to attack, he "could" control how" they attacked, and other variables.

And the great thing was that, Nate wasn't even a black belt yet!

Effective self defense requires more than just a few "karate moves." It involves the ability to think strategically, and understand how to defend yourself with as little wear-and-tear on you as possible.

Every day, well meaning individuals just like you and I enroll in self defense and martial arts classes in order to learn real self defense training. The idea is to learn how to not get beaten, broken, or killed by a crazed lunatic who doesn't care that you have a life, dreams, and people who love and depend on you.

And, more often than not, what they end up learning are some of the most insanely stupid techniques that will never work against a serious attacker. After you read this article, you'll know why you must find an expert who has more than a certificate or black belt to teach you how to defend your self. You need someone with real-world experience doing what you want to be able to do!

Here are 5 of the most insanely stupid techniques that I have seen being taught to sincere students every day. Learn them if you want. But, use them at your own risk!

1) Putting your keys between your fingers as weapons! I don't know where this one came from but, all you have to do is try it sometime. First of all, when you're under pressure of attack, you're not going to have the time or coordination to get them where they're supposed to be. And second - you'll find that they just don't work very well in that position.

If you want to use your keys - just hold one like you normally would. It's strong, reliable, and if it's already in your hand - it's VERY destructive!

2) "X-Blocking" a knife stab from overhead! Now here's a technique that has been passed on by martial artists who have absolutely no idea where their art and it's techniques came from. And, while your arms may be very strong in this position, you lack the one thing that ancient warriors had when they did this technique - a helmet to catch and deflect the knife when it comes flying out of his hand! It's a matter of natural physics that says that the shock to his wrist that occurs when his arm slams into yours, will open his hand and inertia will propel the knife right into your head or face!

If someone is coming at you with a knife, get the hell out of the way!

3) Taking up a boxers position with your hands. For this one to work, he has to believe the same thing that you do - that your arms are actually indestructible shields! The smart attacker knows that your arms are flesh and blood just like everything else on you, and will just start pounding on your forearm bones to shut them down. Then, once you've lost the use of your arms, he moves in for the kill!

Your arms are good shields, but they must be positioned so that they are protected as well. If you're going to use your arms for cover, then position them so that the attacker has a much more difficult time trying to damage them!

4) Kicking the head! Yeah, let's do that. In an attempt to kick somebody in the head, we're going to sacrifice our groin, femoral artery, base-leg knee, and balance! Again, here's another case of martial artists being absolutely clueless about where their techniques and skills came from and why they were developed in the first place! The high kicks in Tae kwon do, and other forms of karate, were designed for unarmored fighters to kick someone on horseback! So, unless you've got something between your "mommy-daddy button" and the attacker's weapons - don't use these fancy, "look-at-me-ain't-I-cool" kicks on the street!

If you want to kick the guy in the head, take out his legs first. and then when he's down, kick him anywhere you want!

5) Carrying a gun for self defense with no combat training! This one is only asking for trouble. It's amazing how many people have a tremendously false sense of confidence - cops included - just because they're carrying a firearm. It's stupid. Absolutely insane! And the reason is that THE number one skill that is under-practiced, if it's ever practiced at all, is...

...drawing the weapon under pressure!

If you want to carry a firearm for self defense, make sure that you have the training to draw the weapon, aim without the use of sights, and hit your target every time the weapon fires - and be able to do these things while UNDER PRESSURE - not with your gun in one hand and a beer in the other, while you plink cans and bottles off a tree stump with your buddies!

Self defense is more than just learning cool moves or packing some "heat." It involves a mindset that understands not just what to do if something happens - but also what a real situation is like!

So, the question you have to ask yourself is, do you just want to think and feel like you can protect yourself or do you really want to have the skills that will allow you to protect yourself and others of your choosing when it matters the most?

The truth is that...

Effective self defense requires more than just a few "karate moves." It involves the ability to think strategically, and understand how to defend yourself with as little wear-and-tear on you as possible.

If you really want to know what you MUST know to survive a real street attack, read my newest self defense book: "Fight Smarter - Not Harder!" It's available free at: http://www.warrior-concepts-online.com/street-fighting-self-defense-book.html

Martial Arts Self-Defense Techniques - 4 Self Defense Techniques You May Not Learn In The Dojo

Martial arts self-defense training with a qualified instructor is an excellent way to learn the basics of personal protection. Nevertheless, most instructors have never been in a street fight. And good for them. No one should have to be put in a real life situation to defend yourself. In this article I will detail 4 street defense techniques that may not be taught in the dojo.

Self Defense Tactic 1 - Ripping And Tearing

Ripping and tearing of the flesh, hair, ears, etc. are self-defense techniques that are not normally associated with martial arts training. And for good reason. Ripping the ear off an opponent in a training class or at a tournament would probably bring criminal charges and possibly jail time. But on the streets you need to know how to fight to survive.

Rip by using the hands and tear at any soft part of the body that you can grab. If you have ever seen a boxing or MMA match in which an opponent is injured and bleeding you will notice the other opponent attacks the injury. The same can be applied with a fighting defense. If the assailant has any type of previous injury, attacking the injury with rips and tears will cause it to open up again.

Self Defense Tactic 2 - Pinching

Pinching is a useful women's self-defense technique. Many women have fingernails, either real or applied that can cause pain when pinching. Rips and tears can also be done with strong fingernails on exposed flesh. Pinching is usually effective if your arms are pinned. There are many pressure points, or nerves, that are vulnerable body parts. Attacking the inner part of the thigh and under the armpit are two such areas.

Most times pinching will not disable an attacker. But it may interrupt their thought process and allow you to escape the initial assault. Pinching can also be accomplished by using the second knuckles of the index and middle fingers. Pinch and twist any part of the assailant that you can grab with all your strength and force.

Self Defense Tactic 3 - Biting

We are taught from birth not to bite others. Why? Because the jaw muscles are one of the strongest set of muscles we posses. And the teeth are extremely hard and sharp. Biting is a defense technique that is rarely taught. When there is no other self-defense tactic that can be applied biting is extremely effective and can create immense pain.

Biting should not be taken lightly. If you are able to grab any part of the assailant with your teeth make sure to bite off a chunk. Even through all but the heaviest clothing, the average person with no self-defense or martial arts training can inflict enough pain to escape. It may sound rather disgusting but it could save your life.

Self Defense Tactic 4 - Head Butts

Head butts are another self-defense technique that are rarely taught. Head butts are banned in boxing and MMA matches. The reason again is that a head butt can inflict some serious damage to the opponent. In addition, the one instigating this self-defense technique could be seriously injured if their head hits the opponent's head in the wrong way.

Head butts can be used against any vulnerable body part of the attacker. The top of the forehead at the hairline is the thickest part of the skull. This is the best place to strike with. But in some situations, like being grabbed from behind, the back of the skull can be used to smash into the face of the person grabbing you. The sides of the head can be used to swing at the assailant as well. Much like a punch, a strike from the side of the head to the attackers jaw, throat, nose or face could disable them allowing you to escape.

Do you want to learn more about protecting yourself in a real-life self defense scenario?

One of the most common questions that beginner students have is, "How will I know which technique to use in a real self defense situation against a street fighter who means business?" And, this is a good question, since you never know what you're going to have to defend yourself against, until something actually happens.

However; that being said, there is a way to strategically control your attacker's moves and decision-making process before he ever gets off the first punch. This article focuses on this high-level strategic tactic as one of the expert secrets that can make you practically invincible in a real attack!

I know that, when a student asks the above question or one like it, what he or she is really asking is, "How do I make things as easy as possible for myself?" - "How do I give myself the greatest advantage?

Because, the reality of the situation when it comes to real-world self defense is this...

You will do what you can do.

No more - no less.

But, wouldn't it be great if you could control his decision-making abilities, and therefor his actual attacks?

How would it feel if you knew, beforehand, what your attacker was going to throw at you?

How would that change things for you?

Well, it can be done.

You don't have to just wait and watch him throw whatever punch, grab, or kick he wants to do at the moment. You can actually control what he does - and when he does it!

Now, I'm not saying that this is easy. In fact, in most solid, realistic (and honest) programs, this is a very advanced lesson. But, do you know what?

If you know what to look for, you can actually see it in even the most basic of techniques!

So, what is this secret self defense technique of the experts and advanced martial arts masters?

It is the ability to use your body positioning, relative to his - to control his perceptions about what is, and what is not, a good move for his attack.

In many martial arts like Ninjutsu - the self defense and personal development system of Japan's ancient Ninja familes - there is the concept of "kamae" (pronounced Kah-mah-eh, or sometimes just "come-eye"). The Ninja's kamae body postures should not be confused with the static "stances" found in karate and other conventional martial arts systems. Kamae are dynamic by nature, and constantly changing to suit the situation.

Where the karate student's stance is seen as the launching point of his punches and kicking technniques, the Ninja's postures are adaptable and fluid - they include not only the positioning and "posturing" of his body parts, but also his mind, emotions, and attitude!

As an example of how your body position changes and controls your opponent's thoughts and actions, consider this possible self defense scenario:

As your assailant approaches you with his hands up in the typical, boxer-like, street fighter position, you respond by backing up and lifting your hands defensively in front of your chest in a "fending off" posture. In this position, your attacker can see over your hands and employ the psychological "stare-down" tactic for intimidation. And, since his hands are above the level of your own, he will be able to punch or grab much easier than you will be able to block or parry his incoming limbs when he does.

Contrast this with a slight change in position so that, when he approaches, you control the placement of your arms so that they are right in front of each of his. Your body, rather than being square-on, exposing your targets, is angled so as to remove your targets from straight-line punches.

In this second position, your attacker will feel the presence of your arms, and feel a need to either grab them, or to punch around them. He will no longer have the option to punch straight in on you - partly because he has obstacles to go around, partly because your best targets are covered/shielded, and partly because your targets have been positioned in a way that doesn't give him an easy way of getting at them.

Controlling a street fight or self defense situation is not about the techniques that you've learned in class. Control is about manipulating the situation so that you have the advantage and the ABILITY to use those techniques.

Remember... no attacker is going to just allow you to do your self defense techniques on him in a real fight. You are going to have to earn each and every one of them!

Effective self defense requires more than just a few "karate moves." It involves the ability to think strategically, and understand how to defend yourself with as little wear-and-tear on you as possible.

One of the biggest mistakes that you can make in learning to defend yourself is to just take someone's word. Regardless of whether the person you're talking to is wearing a black belt around his or her waist, is a 600th degree poo-bah in Tic Tac Toe, or is the creator of the latest, greatest, "kill-'em with one finger" self defense course, you must take responsibility for insuring that you get the kind of self defense techniques that will actually save your you-know-what, when the time comes!

This article sheds some light on one piece of knowledge that you should have so that you can make sure that you're not trying to learn self defense from some guy who just has a few "ideas," but has never really "been there" to prove that his stuff works! I can't guarantee that, after you read this, that you'll be able to spot a "wanna-be" from the real thing, when it comes to self defense experts. But, you will at least know where to begin to insure that your are learning the kind of self defense techniques that will match the types of attacks you are most likely to encounter!

And, before I go into this lesson any further, let's set the record straight that...

Self defense is NOT the same thing as "fighting!"

It's funny but, when I was a cop and I was pulling two guys off each other, every single time both of them would tell me that they were just "defending themselves!" Funny. You both looked like you were fighting. That means that neither of you looked like you were trying to get away from the other!

And, that same mentality is prevalent in the self defense world. Every guru seems to have a "self defense" book, video, or program. And yet, when you look closely at the lessons being taught, what you see are lessons for fighting - for beating someone down - not escaping.

But, if we're talking about self defense, we must include the context in which we are defending ourselves. We must also look at things like why we're being attacked, by whom, and with what kind of attack or weapon.

What I mean is that, to understand and therefor be able to look for the right self defense techniques for you, you need to ask the question, "under what condition or circumstances am I likely to be attacked?"

Here are several types of self defense paradigms. Each one comes with it's own set of needs, strategies, tactics, and purpose. And, these things in and of themselves, determine what "kind" of self defense techniques you need.

1) Self Defense for police officers and armed security personnel.

2) Self Defense for body guards and executive protection specialists.

** The above two types require almost the exact opposite when it comes to training, by the way!

3) Self Defense for the average citizen. (This is subdivided and can be further broken down to include self defense for women, rape defense, and self defense for children)

While there are general principles and concepts that are universal, regardless of which group you are in, the fact remains that if you are really going to learn the types of self defense techniques that you need to be able to defend yourself against "your" most likely attacker, who's throwing his most likely attack...

...you MUST begin by knowing who and what that is BEFORE you even get started!

Effective self defense requires more than just a few "karate moves." It involves the ability to think strategically, and understand how to defend yourself with as little wear-and-tear on you as possible.

Are you serious about developing real-world, no nonsense self defense techniques? Of course you are. You wouldn't be reading this article if you weren't!

But, did you know that the "way" you think about self defense, and where you put your focus, could make the difference between really being a master of the art of self defense...

...and being totally "wrong" if you're ever attacked?

It's true.

I want you to think about something.

And this is important.

So important in fact, that your life and safety depend on you really getting your head wrapped around this critical, life-saving lesson! And that lesson is that...

Fights are won or lost. Attacks are evaded, escaped, or survived.

Do you understand that?

Fights... where both combatants are willing participants in the match, and both are trying to win the same "prize," is very different from a situation where you are the victim of a savage attack and must do everything and anything in your power to not be beaten, broken, or killed!

These are two VERY different situations. And therefore, require two very different approaches to training and preparation for the "event."

If you're serious about learning no nonsense self defense techniques that are designed for real-world, street self defense, then you must understand this critical difference!

Because, and this is my point...

...you will only be prepared for what you train for.

So, if you're training to fight in a competition - a rule-laden match - where there are specific things that you can and cannot do...

...and your goal is to be able to survive a street self defense attack...

...then you may find that you are completely unprepared for what you are most definitely going to face at the hands of an attacker who made damned sure that:

He didn't follow any rules
The fight wasn't "fair"
He had the advantage
He was probably going to get away with it!

Never forget that self defense is about surviving a street attack, and should focus on simple, no frills, no nonsense self defense moves - not belts, trophies, or fame and fortune.

At the end of the day, when you've successfully handled an attack, you will realize that your trophy - the only trophy that counts is going home safely, and remaining in the lives of those who love you, and who look to you for safety and protection!

Effective self defense requires more than just a few "karate moves." It involves the ability to think strategically, and understand how to defend yourself with as little wear-and-tear on you as possible.

If you really want to know what most people don't know about how to master self defense and how to survive a real street attack, read my newest self defense book, "Fight Smarter - Not Harder!" It's available free at: http://www.warrior-concepts-online.com/street-fighting-self-defense-book.html

Self defense techniques can take many years to practise. Having studied traditional martial arts for many years I have learned some incredible techniques. But which self defense techniques would I use in a street fight?

There's an argument that knowing any moves is better than nothing at all if faced with an attacker. However, rather than spending years training and practising it is possible to pick up some very direct and simple ways of dealing with a violent encounter. I call these street self defence moves. Some would even call them dirty fighting moves!

Training in a martial art like aikido or judo is a fantastic thing to do and if there is a club in your area I would encourage you to do so. Alternatively, karate or a more modern system like Choi Kwang Do may be best for you. I would encourage you to visit all local clubs, talk to the instructors and watch some classes to see which might be best for you personally. But would these martial arts actually work in a street fight?

Real self defense starts with awareness. You should constantly be aware of where you are, what's going on around you and what situations may arise. This isn't to suggest you should live in fear and panic! It's simply about being sensible and knowing what's going on. For example, would it be sensible for a woman on her own to go to a part of a city she didn't know and arrange to meet someone she'd only met once before in a bar? For me this would require a very high state of awareness!

Imagine you park your car late at night in a dark street. You see a short cut down and alleyway you think will take you where you want to go? Again, a very high state of awareness would be required if you did want to risk this situation.

Knowing how you react under pressure or potential threat of violence is another key element of real self defense. Fortunately, most of us will face such situations very rarely. But when we do we need to understand how our body will react and how we can keep control to deal with whatever happens.

Should there be no other course of action left other than to fight to defend ourselves it's best to use simple, direct self defense self techniques. Fancy high kicks and martial arts flourishes are just for the movies! For example, a distracting strike to the face will buy you time to get away or take other action. Fighting should always be the last resort and talking always comes first. But in some situations - particularly when alcohol or other drugs are involved - physical action may be the only answer for self protection.

For years most self defense training practiced by people was through their local martial arts club or dojo. While most people who do teach Reality Based self defense have some form of a martial arts background, there is a huge difference between real self defense and martial arts.

My self defense background also began in the martial arts world. I trained and received my black belt in Shotokan karate. It was an excellent introduction to learning how to strike, kick, and learn throws. As I began exploring more of the world and real self defense, I found while those skills were necessary and beneficial, they were by no means meant for the stress and panic of a real attack scenario.

First of all, when you train in a dojo, respect for your training partner is paramount, which is the exact opposite to how an attacker sees you in the street. Think of it, in a real street attack, your attacker has chosen you because they have no respect for you and consider you to be an easy target. Why else would they have chosen you? An attacker does not look at a potential victim as a challenge that will make them into a better attacker.

Rather, they have sized you up as the easiest person to get whatever they are after. As Tony Blauer (self defense expert) says, "An attacker only wants one of 3 things, either your property, your body or your life". In a dojo, your training partner does not want any of those things, so how do you train to give yourself the best tools necessary to handle a real street confrontation.

MMA and the UFC are huge these days attracting millions of viewers and fans. While these warriors are obviously well skilled in striking, grappling and many forms of the martial arts, we still set rules when they are in combat. Think of it, why are strikes such as eye gouges, biting, small joint manipulation, strikes to the back of the head not allowed? Simply because THEY ARE EFFECTIVE!

My favourite disallowed technique is that you are not allowed to put a finger into any orifice or into any cut or laceration on an opponent. That one is just nasty. There are about 20 strikes or techniques that are not allowed. Guess what? In a real street attack those are probably your best tools to utilize. Also, traditionally in martial arts we learn skills that involve complex motor skills which are just not designed for a high stress situation. When your heart rate reaches approximately 150 beats per minute all your body is able to perform is Gross Motor movements and strikes like palms, elbows, and knees. Complex motor skills can only be introduced once you are in physical and mental control of your attacker.

In a real attack scenario you are hit emotionally first. When I trained and became certified in Personal Defense Readiness through Tony Blauer I quickly realized how true this is. Most systems completely ignore this aspect of self defense and it is just as important, if not important, than having the physical tools to defend yourself. As Mr. Blauer says, "The mind navigates the body". What this means is you can have all the physical knowledge of self defense in the world, but if you are not prepared mentally, you will not be able to use those physical skills. Real self defense training incorporates Emotional Climate training (PDR) in their drills. Instead of having a partner who cooperates with you, they provide the resistance and emotions of a real attacker. What this does is help to recreate as much as possible, all the details of a real attack.

In closing, while martial arts is a great way to learn some of the skills involved in self defense, one must learn all else that goes with the physical skills.

Martial Arts Self-Defense Techniques - How To Break An Attackers Focus In A Self-Defense Situation

If someone has grabbed you their focus is completely on controlling you. This can be a dangerous self-defense situation. A rear choke or headlock can force you into unconsciousness due to lack of oxygen. If one or both of your hands, wrists or arms are grabbed you can be moved or restricted from moving. In this article I will discuss how to break their focus and break their grip.

Breaking the focus of an assailant is an important aspect of controlling a fight. Boxers use feinting techniques quite often to get their opponent to focus on not getting hit instead of hitting. A shift of the head or eyes may be all it takes to get them to move a different way. A punch from the opposite hand into the way they are moving can create enough power for an instant knockout. You may have seen it in a boxing or MMA match. A fake punch with the left hand gets the other to move to the right and a right cross catches them on the chin and down they go.

The same applies to how to fight in real life. Getting the aggressive person to move one way and you move the other. The preferred action is to escape and leave the scene. But when this is not possible there are a few simple martial arts self-defense techniques to use to fight your fight. Getting them to focus on what you are doing instead of what they want to do is a huge advantage.

How To Fight Example 1 - Side Headlock

If you are placed in a side headlock typically the attacker will try to bend you over and place your head against their hip. This is a very dangerous situation and you must act quickly to avoid becoming unconscious. An all too common reaction is to try to lift them off the ground. Another is to try to pry off their arm. These may work if they are smaller or weaker than you. If they are larger or stronger you will only waste your time and energy and they will clamp down harder.

Instead of working against them work for yourself. One simple but extremely effective martial arts self-defense technique is to use your hand behind the assailant to strike the back of their knee closest to you. This strike breaks their focus temporarily and takes their mind off the headlock. Immediately after the knee strike follow up with the other hand by reaching up to their face. Dig your fingers deep into their eyes or nose and drive their head back with as much force as possible. It is important to drive their head back with maximum force all the way to the ground. The pain inflicted by your assault to their face will usually get them to release the headlock and focus on getting your hand out of their eyes or nose.

How To Fight Example 2 - Grabbed From The Front

If you are grabbed from the front by the lapel or by the arms striking the attacker is difficult as their arms can easily block the strike. Typically your first reaction is to try to push away which only makes them tighten their grasp. Flailing wildly with your arms or trying to bring them closer will only waste your energy. Again a simple martial arts self-defense technique will break their focus.

A kick to the leg may be all it takes to get them thinking about something else. The kick does not have to be full force. Just enough to get their attention. One important point is to not touch their grabbing arm or arms. This will focus their attention more on their grasp. Immediately after the kick to their leg use an elbow to drive into their forearm or elbow joint. This will most times cause them to release their grasp. If not bring the elbow back with full force to strike any part of their body that you can. After they release leave the area as quickly as you can.
